WHAT IS A MODERN HOME?

Modernist architects chose to create homes that showed a distinct lack of ornament and flair, in contrast to what was seen in the popular home designs of the time. They designed homes that featured a strong horizontal composition with large open floor plans, intentional asymmetry, and large expanses of glass windows or glass walls. The focus here was to create a simplified home with an emphasis on function - removing unnecessary details and frills. As a result, many of these homes were designed to blur the boundaries between the indoors and outdoors. I like to divide modern homes into these three categories:

Mid Century Modern

Mid-century modern style typically refers to a very distinctive architectural style of home that was built from the early 1930s to the 1960s. Some key qualities associated with this style are square homes with flat roofs, a monochromatic color palette, and low-key furnishings with a simple and distinct attention to minimalism while avoiding a stark, cold feeling. As modernist architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe stated: "Nature, too, shall live its own life. We must be aware not to disrupt it with the color of our houses and interior fittings. Yet we should attempt to bring nature, houses and human beings together into a higher unity."

West Coast Modern

The West Coast Modern style developed from a modernist approach to suburban living and a rainforest climate. The style first appeared in Vancouver, Seattle and Portland in the 1930s. Architects in these regions drew inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture, the International Style, and Japanese residential design. They incorporated these elements into designs that responded to the climate, terrain and rainforest setting in which they worked. The result was a style of building, primarily domestic, with a close relationship to their individual sites. Some West Coast Modern buildings are built dramatically on the edges of cliffs, others are close to the garden. They vary in shape and size but share principles of design.

Contemporary Modern

Put simply, contemporary homes reflect the architecture of today. Most contemporary homes do have a modern flair to them, with design tweaks from postmodernism and deconstructivism, as well. For the first time, we also see homes where the building materials are just as important as the final product. With modern contemporary homes, we see a huge emphasis on natural and sustainable building materials and architecture which showcases sleek lines, a monochromatic color scheme, minimal details, open floor plans, large windows, lots of natural light, and chic outdoor living.
My family and I have lived in this Mid Century Modern home (built 1962) in Saanich since 2007, and we absolutely love it! There is nothing like have an 18 foot wall of south facing glass to kill the winter blues.
